Ask The Readers: How Would You Use This Tool?

September 6th 2007   Ask The Readers   9 comments

A few days ago I came across a mini folder for index cards complete with plastic tabs from an Asda supermarket. It looked useful and was very cheap so I just had to buy it even though I have no idea what I’d use it for. A few months ago I could have made good use of it, I had always wanted to use index cards in my GTD system but could never find a suitable storage medium for them that appealed to me. Nowadays I use my weekly planner sheet which works well for so I am loath to change.

So, I am putting a question out to all my readers; how would you use this tool, pictured above? I’m open to any suggestions whether it be incorporating it into a full GTD system or using it to store recipes. I’m sure you are all an imaginative bunch so it will be very interesting to read some of the ideas :)

If you are a software developer, try using it to carry all of your CRC cards

I saw them too as I wandered around an Asda store in Milton Keynes, what a small world.

I didn’t buy one, but thought they looked like a great way to collect thoughts, quick notes, that kind of things. They’re more sturdy than a piece of paper, and could be indexed in the folder to give them some order.

Small world indeed. My first thought was for collecting notes, I’m just not sure what sort of information I personally would need to collect at the moment. My partner is going to use hers for revision notes though.
Rolf, the CRC card idea looks good, it’s just a pity I ditched the OOP after I graduated from uni :)

Personally, I’m in the process of organizing my housekeeping chores and responsibilities. Not sure exactly how I’m going to do it at this point since I want to “spread the love” with my boyfriend/housemate, but something tells me index cards will be involved. Perhaps something like this would work…now I’ve gotta find one in California!

For memorizing all the two-letter words in Scrabble!

Chrissy, do a Google search for index card ring binders. Though this was personally the first time I have ever seen one before in a shop, doing a quick search has bought up a few other options you might be able to consider.

Marina, nice idea. I so want to use it as a reference tool :)

I found the exact same thing at Staples here in the States. I keep it in my knitting bag to make notes about the projects I am working on so when it comes time to write up instructions (I publish my patterns) I have all my notes in one place.

If you took the cards out and printed photos xt 3×5 or whatever size the binder holds, you’d have a mini artist portfolio or family brag book.

Nice ideas Charlene, I may see if I can print out my templates at 3×5 size. The tool definitely seems fit for note taking, it’s just a pity I’m not at university anymore, it would have fitted my purposes brilliantly. I’ve briefly tried it out as a tool for tracking any all possible projects I can do for each role. For instance with my home responsibility I’ve listed all the possible projects/actions I can do in the living room, hallway etc.

Yummy productivity pr0n! Here is some ideas:

  • Recipes
  • Menus
  • Entertainment Log
  • Books to watch for
  • Movies to rent
  • Blog post ideas
